English/German Translation Branding
Establishing a Logo
I decided to use this logo as it communicated the identity of the brand the clearest. The design needed to be as straight forward as possible so to not cause confusion with the clients of the service speaking different languages. I decided to focus on print finishes to give it a unique identity - this logo will be printed in metallic gold on black stock (German national colours, gold also synonymous with traditional British royalty).

Vice 'Rule Britannia' Text
Between us we decided on a typeface to use based on my research and that would fit the asthetic of the rest of the project.
Instead of repeating 'VICE' at two different points like we had initially planned, instead decided on using it within the mandatory text it give us more time on the other more engaging parts of our video.
Below is a rough storyboard on how the animation will play out.

OUGD505 Interim Concept Pitch & Feedback
Gained some useful feedback from the session which as given me a lot of help to where to take the project. Below is the boards I presented and the comments/feedback I received.
Peer Feedback
Comments on research to date:
- Shocking and interesting theme, very important for what's going on now.
- Watch '16 Blocks' it might be based on a true story about police committing crimes to solve crimes.
- Really important/relevant issue in todays society that needs to be addressed and dealt with. Its good that your research is both historical and recent, shows it has been an ongoing issue.
- Good shock statistics.
- Shock factor definitely a strong point.
- TED Talk Evil Guard Study.
Improvement:
- Target UK.
- Focus on human rights.
- Decide on specific angle - target the police or the victims of brutality.
- Psychological side of criminal/police minds.
- Use shock tactics to expose to audience.
Further development:
- Focus on convicting police - police aren't above the law.
- Psychological route - de-individualisation - Zimbardo prison study.
- Get people to feel more comfortable around police, get them to know their rights.
- Investigate real change - take a unique approach.
- Who are you going to target?
- How would you represent it? Think of formats.
The Stanford Prison Experiment
In 1971 there was a local newspaper ad calling for volunteers in a study of the psychological effects of prison life. A simulated prison environment was set up to carefully note the effects of this institution on the behaviour of all those within its walls.
The volunteers were randomly split between prisoners and guards. The guards were given no specific training on how to be guards. Instead they were free, within limits, to do whatever they thought was necessary to maintain law and order in the prison and to command the respect of the prisoners. The guards made up their own set of rules, which they then carried into effect.
The guards wore mirror sunglasses which prevented anyone from seeing their eyes or reading their emotions, and thus helped to further promote their anonymity. The experiment was studying not only the prisoners but also the guards, who found themselves in a new power-laden role.
The prisoners decided to rebel against the guards - the guards met and decided to treat force with force.
This experiment shows the effect a position of power has on peoples morals and judgement and suggests how this translate into the real world where conditions are the same.
The Stanford Prison Experiment (Film)
A film was released in January which I plan to watch to give me further insight into the experiment and how the guards and prisoners acted.

Secret 7 'Sledgehammer' PETER GABRIEL
Secret 7" was a good opportunity to create some original artwork outside of the design approach I normally take. When researching into the song I came across the weird and unique music video for it which provided some inspiration on what sort of image to create.
Secret 7" description of the song: 'Apparently this song is all about sex. It's influential stop motion video that accompanied the track's original release in 1986 is an all time great, and we shall be pressing the video edit audio.'
The tracks Secret 7" choose aim to encompass a large audience, meaning the genres and time periods completely vary. Some act as nostalgia like Peter Gabriel's and bring back memories and images from the time (can see this from comments on the videos). For me this song and the video seem dated and 'retro' so wanted to show this in my artwork I produced.
Above is the original artwork for the singles release which is a fairly obvious solution and not as colourful or imaginative as the song.
Visual Inspiration
Focusing on shapes, colours and composition of images.

I am aiming to screen print my design, however because of time I need to reduce the colours to about 2 or 3 to make it possible.
Below are my colour choices in CMYK making sure the colours would be digitally printable.
Screen printing gives more freedom with colour choice. I originally wanted to use fluorescent colours to match the memphis/miami vice aesthetic. I also don't want the image to look too clean and vectorised as it does currently will experiment with different textures and media.
One way of getting a textured effect is to print it out then collage it back together. I also like the grainy print of the block black colours when scanned in.
Wanted the image to look as flat as possible so went around the edges removing the shadows created by the scanner.
Final Digital Design
The outcome below encompasses the context and era (for me) the song was made and the sound of the record. The print finish gives a retro feel although it is a digitally printed vector image.
After some print trials I found that the red was a little too dark. I have mocked up a sleeve from my other colour choice which works just as well and is down to my own personal preference which I choose. The vector based illustration would work better than the collaged images which lost quality in printing so decided to use that.
Record Label Design (Vinyl Sticker)
Wanted to keep it simple and classic so focused on minimal type choices and simple clear information. Looked at other labels and the original.
